Every Sunday, Monastiraki square and the streets radiating from it fill with vendors selling everything from Ottoman-era coins to 1970s Greek film posters, handmade jewellery, leather goods, and secondhand books in a dozen languages. It is a chaotic, joyful, deeply Athenian experience. Even if you buy nothing, wandering through it is one of the best free hours you can spend in the city. Get there early (before 10:00) for the best finds and cooler temperatures. Haggling is expected and welcomed.
